RESOURCES
Many resources are available to industry to run clinical trials, set up your operations in a research park, coordinate research collaborations or run tests through research laboratories. See below for profiles and contact information.
Interface Science Western
Scientists at Western have long been pioneers in work on materials science and engineering, boasting an esteemed group of faculty who are not only experts in their field, but are internationally known and respected. ISW is home to the most extensive Canadian accelerator-based facility for materials sciences research.
What is Interface Science Western?
Interface Science Western (ISW) was formed in 1986 to research and solve problems in surface and materials science. It comprises a diverse group of chemists and physicists who are world-class experts in surface and interfacial science research. ISW is well known for its capabilities in analyzing and characterizing the composition, structure, properties and behaviour of surfaces and thin films. Researchers linked to ISW are studying materials at the nanoscale using proximal probes and scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopes. These approaches are used to study the nanoscale properties of polymer surfaces, composites, semiconductor surfaces, biological materials, metals, alloys and ceramics.
Research
There are a number of research areas being explored at ISW, including thin films, trace element impurities, polymers, nanoscale mechanical properties of materials and interfaces, corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, interfacial dynamics, semiconductor surfaces, tribology and adhesion. This research can be applied to the production of anti-wear films, hard coatings, polymers and biological molecules. ISW researchers work closely with companies such as Xerox, General Motors, Alcan and Mitsubishi on long-term commercial projects.
Services
The faculty and staff at ISW conduct basic research but also offer services to industries soliciting professional advice on surface and thin film analysis and solutions for surface and materials science problems. ISW’s expertise is sought by other researchers and organizations ranging from government institutes to major industries in the nuclear energy and manufacturing sectors.
Lawson Clinical Trials
A versatile, fully-staffed clinical trials facility established by the Lawson Health Research Institute, this joint venture between Lawson Research Institute and the London Health Sciences Centre provides increased clinical trials capacity to investigators from London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph'’s Health Care, and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The facility has an ambulatory clinic (2600 sq. ft.) specializing in Phase III trials, as well as a 12 bed, overnight clinic (323 sq. ft.) specializing in Phase I and Phase II trials.
- Expertise in hands-on conduct and management of clinical trials
- Experience with both industry-sponsored and peer-reviewed clinical trials
- Highly efficient recruitment capabilities
- Conduct Phase I-IV clinical trials
- Access to Principal Investigators across a wide variety of therapeutic areas
Robarts Clinical Trials
Robarts Clinical Trials Group is a full service Contract Research Organization. Since 1986 they have collaborated with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, government agencies, and academic investigators in the performance of global, multi-center, randomized controlled trials.
Their proven expertise enables you to achieve maximum value and efficiency for your research. Robarts integrates content area expertise with hands on experience in managing the many aspects of a trial. The end result is greater efficiency and integration of study activities for your clinical development program.

Stiller Centre for Technology Commercialization
The Stiller Centre for Technology Commercialization generates synergy by bringing together great minds in research, professional, medical and commercial sectors. Located in the University Research Park, it is adjacent to world class educational, medical and research facilities: The University of Western Ontario, the London Health Sciences Centre and Robarts Research Institute. The Stiller Centre facilities are designed for start-up technology-based companies. They help to bring their innovation to the market place. They offer our tenants a range of services which include market research, mentoring and operations analysis by our hired Bio-MBA graduates.
Surface Science Western
SSW is a consulting and research laboratory at The University of Western Ontario, handling all aspects of material surface properties. The laboratory has a long record of timely and comprehensive analytical services to industries producing metallic and plastic components. Supporting these services is a facility with advanced surface and microscopic analytical equipment and a staff of fourteen scientists and engineers. Surface Science Western also has supporting research and programs in corrosion science, thin film deposition and surface analysis. In addition, the laboratory acts as a teaching and research centre for academics interested in surfaces and microscopic areas.
University Machine Services
University Machine Services (UMS) is an ancillary service located in the Thompson Engineering Building at the University of Western Ontario. Our goal is to provide assistance in instruction, research, and industry through the design and manufacture of specialized components and equipment. UMS is equipped with a wide range of conventional machine tools and is staffed by over 20 dedicated trades and technical employees
